First Road Run in Taiwan
The same 30-min run. I sweat buckets afterwards in Singapore, but in Taiwan I don’t sweat that much. It’s winter. Or it’s just old age, my old legs are not running the same speed as they did just a year ago. <p> It still feels good tho. Posted from Gary on the move

Hello New Friend
Finally got the new ride from friend’s studio. Nice small pocket rocket. Gonna roam the streets of Taipei together. :-) Posted from Gary on the move
My 200lbs Friends
Been a great weekend with college buddies in town, acting like college kids again. Besides 1 or 2 bros, don’t think our crew have really grown up yet. It doesn’t look like we will get there for another 3 yrs. It’ll be interesting to watch us all take that next step further into adulthood. So for now, we are just gonna keep eating and drinking like we did 10 years ago, for this...
ultimate ears 600vi vs a-jays four
Originally I had the predecessor of Ultimate Ears 600vi, until an unfortunate incident on the streets in Singapore left it broken and it was sent for warranty replacement. In its absence, I bought a-jays four, drawn mostly due to its design: flat cables & matte rubber parts. It helped that the reviews were mostly positive. After a few months with a-jays four, and now another few months with UE...

You Are The F-ing Best
This one goes out to no one in particular. Feeling that the time is passing me by, the song has been capturing my mood. “Cuz she hold me down everytime I hit her upWhen I get right, I promise that we gonna live it up She make me beg for it every time till she give it upAnd I say the same thing everytime” There’s no special anybody. Email Rough Guide to Singapore
Thought I’d share this quick list I threw up for a friend who’s visiting SIngapore with his filming crew. Kinda miss Singapore after I churned this out. Disclaimer: this is not my ‘fave’ list.Bars Scenic: - Ku De Ta on top of Marina Bay Sands - Lantern at Fullerton Bay Hotel - One Altitude at OUB Building in Raffles Place Chill Area - Blu Jaz and the surrounding Arab...

Sun Dinner with Dad
Interestingly, based on HK friends’ recommendation I took my father to 小隱私廚 tonight. It was closed for business and we were redirected to its sister store down the street, 大隱酒食. Good Taiwanese home-style food. There are plenty of shops like this now, selling traditional Taiwanese fare in a nostalgic setting. I typically eat this sh*t up, since I like things with a bit of “Taiwanese...
A Tainan-style Lunch
Had an impromptu lunch with Mike today. Got his message about 10ish for a “milk fish” lunch. Could kinda guess what it was, anyway I was in. Wanted to go somewhere else than the usual spots around the office. It can’t beat the real thing you can have down in Tainan. But overall pretty light and tasty. Would recommend the fish belly if this is your thing. Still some small bones...
Macho Tacos Round 4?
Back here again, looking for a quick and light fix after a busy Monday morning. This place has kinda become my go-to lunch spot. The taco combo is just enough to fill me up without over stuffing myself. Note to self, stick with soft tacos for steak. See the full gallery on Posterous Posted from Gary on the move
蔣記 家鄉麵
Had a feeling that this place would suck so I never stopped by. The only reason we ate here today also didn’t work in its favor: the dumpling shops we wanted to go to all have closed down. It was not bad. I was overcome by the heat and the spiciness of the mala soup. Noodle is springy and firm. I’d probably come back for something else next time. Posted from Gary on the...

Macho Tacos
Back to work after the Mid Autumn Festival long weekend. Here’s what I had for lunch with 2 colleagues, one of which just returned from a long vacation in the US. Almost couldn’t finish this ginormous taco salad thing. Think I’ll stick with either the burrito or try to tacos next time. This is going to be a recurring lunch spot going forward. Startling Discovery
Ok so my sister somehow remembers that I have a posterous/tumblr blog. Hi SIS!!It’s a bit weird to ramble on about my meals and random thoughts now that I know I have an audience. I will try to keep up the posting though. Took plenty of pictures over the Mid Autumn long weekend. It was a nice and relaxing break after the hectic first week. Now I need to get back into work mode. :-( ...
The Standard
After not meeting with pops for dinner for 3 nights in a row, tonight I braved peak hour subway traffic to meet up with him for dinner. Thank goodness for proper hygiene standards in TW cuz we were packed like sardines for most of the ride. Upon arriving at the mrt station, dad took me to his latest beef noodle find: 阿江牛肉麵off羅斯福路, a neighborhood joint. It reminded me of our old neighborhood beef...
有朋至遠方來, 不亦樂乎
Tonight, I met up with my friend and 學長, H, who is on a business trip in town. We had a Taiwanesey dinner at 呂桑, an unassuming place that serves Yilan specialties on 永康街. There is actually another similar spot in the same area, which I took my dad for lunch last weekend. It was good. So was 呂桑. We were both pretty hungry so we ordered 5 dishes: shredded smoked duck, stir-fried wild vegetable,...
Macho Tacos
Came here for lunch with colleagues today. Not bad. It’s been a while since I’ve had Mexican food. It’s not something widely available in Singapore. With a huge number of ABCs living and working in Taiwan, especially in Taipei, this will not be the last American-influenced eateries I’ll visit… See the full gallery on Posterous Posted from Gary on the...
Big A$$ Rice Ball
This is what I had for breakfast today. It’s basically good for 2 meals. The rice ball guy included a fried egg in the rice ball, which I didn’t ask for. At 5 NTD extra, I didn’t mind. I noticed he did the same for all customers before me. If that’s the case, then just make that the default. Hmm… Anyways, I think it’s time for me to get some ground coffee and...
老鄧擔擔麵 延吉街
Got the boiled veggie too, due to my severe lack of veggie and fruit these few weeks. Don’t. It’s not worth 40 NTD. Beginning to think I should go to the supermarket and boil some veggies at home. Onto the noodles, soup is pretty standard issue beef noodle soup. “red-boiled”, no tomatoes, herbs; just a straight up beefy soup. Didn’t care for the thin noodles as much,...

Things I want to do
1. Open up a bakery that makes savory bread with kickass flavorful crust 2. Create a modern taiwanese noodle experience with an emphasis on beef noodles and mf-awesome quality been thinking about both 1 and 2 for a while. I love the Zingerman bread from my days in Ann Arbor. Serious goodness that was evident in each bite, enough flavor that makes you want to really chew and taste your food. I...

Tsukumen from Tetsu in Ramen Champion
After seeing some positive reviews of the new ramen foodcourt concept place, Ramen Champion in Iluma, I decided to finally visit for lunch on a weekday. This was good. I’ll be back to try the other ramen shops. Quick note on the state of Iluma: it is SAD. Like Orchard Central, which opened around the same time 2 yrs or so ago, the small stores that leased brand new retail spaces have long...
XDJ + SBYT = Happiness →
Reading one of my fave food bloggers writing about one of my favorite food is like having an old familiar cook making one of your favorite dish. Or listening to your favorite orchestra playing your favorite symphony. Whatever the comparison, there is no comparison to the simple pleasure of a good hot bowl of xian doujiang. Combined with crisp shaobin and fresh youtiao, THAT will be my last...
Taking Care of Tailored Shirts
As an office drone, I have to wear shirts and dress pants. My first ever encounter with shirts was when I was in kindergarten. Little kids had to wear polyester, almost transparent short sleeve shorts, with polyester short shorts. Up to the point I went to a British-styled international school, the polyester shirt remained a staple of my everyday wear. I hated it.Now after years of faking it as a...

East Coast Cruising, Taiwan
IMG_0814.MOV Watch on Posterous Spent an awesome 11 days in Taiwan. In between weekends, I took a trip down to Hualian to see Taroko National Park, and drove down the coastal highway between Hualian and Taitung. A very scenic drive. Here’s one of the many clips I took with my iPhone. I also took a lot of pics and I’ll be putting them up on picasa soon. Posted from Gary...

John effing Legend

Nespresso, coffee made easy
Made a simple coffee yesterday afternoon. With the help of roommate’s nespresso machine, we get great coffee with the touch of a button these days. Also the Bodum double panel glasses turned out to be a great buy, been using them for all kinds of drinks. Love it when thoughtful innovations add value to everyday life. Posted from Gary on the move

Buffalo Linkstation LS-WVL
Bought some new gear last Fri at the IT Fair. One of the purchase was this Buffalo Linkstation LS-WVL aka Pro Duo to replace the workhorse PCI NAS-01G. Had a bit of trouble reusing my spare 500GB WD Caviar Green initially but thankfully the enclosure just decided to recognize the hard disk tonight. Mercy. What followed was formatting the HDD to XFS, upgrading the firmware and very mild hacking. I...
Worst Ground Espresso Ever

Rediscovering Chinatown
Chinatown Singapore has legitimately become an extension of China, its many vendors are mostly mainland Chinese these days. So are the food and growing number of mainland-centric services. Interesting change from a few years ago; Singapore is indeed a living evolving city, like the recent series on Discovery network which looks suspiciously like a Singapore Tourism Board production. Are they...
Introduction to Bangkok
This was how I introduced Bangkok to C, who had never been to my favorite city in South East Asia. Hungry from the early morning flight, we dropped our bags in our comfortable river-view room and headed out in search of food. Being the chowhound I am, I dragged a groggy, hungry north asian around Chinatown in Bangkok. The cab driver dropped us off somewhere near Yaowarat, the main street in...

Kusabi's Jiro Ramen
Fatty, garlicky, thick chewy noodles, abundance of veggie? All check. The other difference between this and my Tokyo Jiro ramen adventure was that I finished this, while the bowl in Tokyo was stranded with more than half bowl left. Soup could he hotter but I’ll be back. Lots of other intriguing items on the menu. Posted from Gary on the move

Forks In The Road
There are many forks in the life. Eventually you have to take a chance, instead of remaining stagnant. I have been standing still for too long. Despite what I view as obstacles, there is no reason not to change the status quo anymore. You may not be able to change totally who you are after 30 but I’m adamant that you can incrementally improve yourself. The forks I’ve had in my life: -...
