Old, unpretentious, run-down but still doing their thing. Rustic tables and worn-out chairs scatter the tiled-floors. Normally I wouldn’t have stopped but I was no. 1 starved and no. 2 intrigued by the ‘decor’.

Their thing is roast meat, especially duck. Generous serving, maybe they were about to close up shop? Think I’ll come back again in the future. That was not bad for a fast and simple meal.

Posted from Gary on the move

Old Airport Food Centre, part 1 of many

I’ve been coming to this hawker centre semi regularly after my office moved. It’s time to record what I’m eating in this joint, supposedly one of the most famous food court in Singapore. Today, I spent 30 mins waiting for this plate of Kuay Chap from the very famous Blanco Court kuay chap stall. The plate of stewed pork parts came with belly meat, stomach, big intestines and spongy tofu, known in Singapore as tau pok. I can see why this is popular. Most internal organs are sufficiently cleaned and stewed to a soy-infused pleasant flavor. The stomach was a standout. The bellymeat was on the fatty side. Overall, it didn’t disappoint but I might not wait for that long next time.
By the way, my dining companion was sitting directly across from me and chewing his tofu from tofu and veggie soup with his mouth open. Thanks grandpa for helping me focus on my food! You just have to love the hawker centres like this, keepin’ it gapo and real.

We swear by the neighborhood shops we grow up with. If you ask me, the beef noodle around the corner from where I used to live in Taipei is still one of the better ones I’ve had.

Such may be the case with my new spot for lunch. In addition to serving a highly competent bowl of wonton noodles, this place is closest to my new office location. It wins customers in 30 deg celsius, middle of the day weather.

I’m a little late to the Phoenix party. Have been catching up the last couple of days by listening to their discography from beginning to the latest release, which features the infectious track, “1901.” After going through all their songs, I realized that I have actually heard some of their songs before… like Napoleon Says. Can’t quite place it, but I think it was in a commercial or a trailer? Great band.

Northeastern Thai dinner at Golden Mile

Slightly under the weather today, however, still decided to follow through original plan and met up with a couple of friends who I haven’t seen for a while. Though hungry at a table of Issarn delicacies, I ate very carefully and avoided the spicier dishes.

The roast chicken is slightly underwhelming today but still a safe and tasty choice. Roast pork was lean and a bit dull without the chili dip. That’s pretty much all I had. Well, then my friend convinced me to wash it down with a glass of “gwai-lo leung cha”, literally white man’s herbal tea, or in English, beer. Not bad.

Posted from Gary on the move

"Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen."

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”

- Michael Jordan

The Usual Weekend Lunch

Since getting my bike last year, I have found myself going to same places for lunch on weekends. I usually end up at the same noodle shops along Upper East Coast Road. Little did I know there’s a history between all the similar mee pok stalls in the area. The original stall made it big and then uncle wanted to retire. So he passed his craft to the god-son/helper at the time. After a few years, uncle came back out of retirement and set up a stall nearby. The former helper now a successful operator, eventually decided to move his stall elsewhere. Another mee pok vendor took over the stall space made famous by the former tenants.

Anyways, these 3 stalls in my hood each has very loyal customer base. A 20-30 mins wait for a simple bowl of noodles is very common. I waited 25 mins for the bowl of noodles in the picture. My verdict? Noodles are springy, the ingredients standard, the chili numbed my tongue and the soup is flavorful but not too overpowered by chinese preserved vegetables. Overall pretty much what a bowl of mee pok should be.

I’d have to say I would continue going back to the original uncle spot. The noodles can be a little overcooked at times. But it’s a pretty nostalgic and laid-back setting. Great kopi. Some little bites to munch on when I wait for noodles. Better overall experience. The small things do matter.

Posted from Gary on the move

jeannr:

Now this is some legit lunch. Walked by this place in Lau Pat Sat last week when I was searching high and low for something interesting to eat when I met up with a couple of college friends. Very intrigued by the roasting racks of barbeque chicken and pork, as well as the respectable line waiting to be served.

Had the chance to try it when I ended up at their branch across from Cathay Cineleisure last Sunday. But I had a bad case of motion sickness. Brought the chopped up pork belly home. Got the different sauces. Hit the spot after a rough day on a boat trip. I was hungry for more.

I was in the Lau Pat Sat area again today. Went straight to the stall. Took my eyes off the chopping board while fixing my sauces. Felt that I got more meat from the *SCAPE/Youth Park branch. Didn’t really matter. Mang Kiko’s Lechon is legit. I will head back to try their roast chicken one of these days.

Decided to go to Golden Mile today to pick up jump rope, which is an efficient conditioning tool and one of the things I picked up from muay thai lessons. Btw, the small bottles of thai liniment only cost SGD 4.50 here. Remembered I paid much more than that at BNM. Not a great way to build a loyal customer base by trying to profit off accessories.

Anyway another thing lured me to “Little Thailand” (more southern Thailand than BKK), the food. Been here a few times for dinner but have never come here for lunch. As a complex that houses discos, hair salons, massage parlours, a super market and raw/cooked food stalls, funky smells permeate the air day and night. Despite the surrounding, the food delivers again. Solid bowl of Thai beefiness. More meat than the usual $3 bowls of beef soup/noodle found in hawker centres across the island. Soup is a little too heavy for my taste but not enough to diminish the experience. I’ll be back again.

I pass by this old coffee shop on my way to the new office location almost everyday. Every morning regulars, uncles, aunties and grannies, fill the foldout tables and while the mornings away with a cup of kopi and a bowl of noodles.

Finally I had enough time this morning to sit down and get myself a bowl. Very light broth. They charged me a bit more than the auntie sitting across from me. Old-timer discount. It’s cool. I guess it all adds to the charm of the place. This is part of daily life for residents in this neighborhood. I am however just a passer-by.
